My favourite aunt died today. It wasn't a surprise seeing as she'd been sick for a while but I'm left feeling very lost.

Margaret was my dad's sister, a really amazing lady who left her home in Birmingham to move to Chicago and become a GI bride. She and her husband had seven children and when Tom died in his forties Margaret was left to bring them all up on her own.

Even though she lived so far away she visited often and I felt as if I knew her better than any of my other relatives. She spoke her mind, she rubbed people up the wrong way and she was incredibly unconventional and probably this is why I felt such an affinity with her.

She's being cremated. Half her ashes are being sprinkled in America and the other half will be flown back here. I shall find a good place for her.
